Chapter Nine

Mac’s face was the color of fresh snow, his eyes rounded with shock. He appeared to be swallowing over a lump of coal. Tia stepped toward him, automatically reaching out, touching his arm, offering comfort as he’d offered it to her minutes ago.

He held himself as stiff as a frozen sculpture. “If Grant was the intended victim—”

His voice broke. His eyes blazed as though heated from a fire fed by impotent rage and confusion. If ever she understood how someone was feeling, it was this man, at this time.

She finished his thought for him, “Then the killer knows you’re impersonating Grant.”

He nodded, then jammed his hands through his short hair. Anger spewed from him in one curse after another. His outburst ended as abruptly as it began. He looked as though he were shaking off some evil spell, as though he couldn’t believe his own behavior. The tips of his ears glowed pink and he wore a sheepish, apologetic expression. “I’m sorry, I don’t usually swear like that.”

“I know.” She squeezed his forearm. His eyes cooled, but retained a warmth that came from deep within, that had the power to reach inside and touch her soul. A whisper of fire shimmied through Tia, electrified her, terrified her. She released him and stepped back with sudden self-consciousness.

Gingerly readjusting the cloth to her wound, she said, “I can’t imagine which of our suspects is responsible. I would swear they all believed you were Grant. I suppose that just means one of them is a really good actor.”

Mac thought about Gwen. “One of them wasn’t acting. She thought I was Grant.”

“Nancy?”

“No.” He turned off the computer and moved away from the desk. “I want to get you to a hospital, but first, we’d better call the police and report this break-in.”

She shook her head, instantly regretting it as the room began to swim. “We can’t do that, Mac. We need to lock this office and get out of here. Let Grant’s staff discover the burglary.”

“What?” He was incredulous, obviously recalling her insistence last night that he call the cops and tell them about Grant.

Tia took his hand, shutting her heart to the instant, unspoken connection she felt. “If we talk to the police, we’ll have to explain our suspicions. Without proof, we’ll sound like we are the ones doing something dishonest.”

“I don’t know. Maybe.” Mac grew thoughtful, likely weighing the probabilities.

She strove to convince him. “If by some remote chance the police do believe us, they’ll stop your launch with their own investigation so fast your head will spin.”

He nodded, obviously coming to the same conclusion. “I think that’s what the killer is counting on.”

“Exactly.” Another thought struck her, chilling her. “Oh, my God, Mac. Even if we don’t report the break-in, as Grant, you’ll be required to show up here as soon as the police are called in.”

His eyes widened with understanding. “So, either way, Grant’s killer diverts my attention from the launch and I’m defeated.”

He looked beaten, but she realized it was fatigue and stress more than anything.
